“this one too much” — People express concern as recent data reveals that 141,000 Nigerians migrated to the UK within a year. (Video)

Recent data from the UK’s Office for the National Statistics indicates a significant influx of Nigerians to the United Kingdom, with 141,000 migrating in the past year.

This aligns with the trend of economic migration termed “japa.” The UK’s immigration flow from non-EU countries in the year ending June 2023 includes Indian (253,000), Nigerian (141,000), Chinese (89,000), Pakistani (55,000), and Ukrainian (35,000) nationals.

Changes to the UK’s immigration laws, effective January 2024, will impact dependants accompanying international students on non-research postgraduate courses.

Despite potential challenges, the number of Nigerians studying in the UK has grown significantly from 6,798 in 2017 to 59,053 as of December 2022, with a corresponding increase in dependents.
