JAPA SYNDROME: Registrar reveals that 10,697 medical laboratory scientists have emigrated from Nigeria

The Registrar of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, Tosan Erhabor, disclosed to reporters that a total of 10,697 medical laboratory scientists have emigrated from Nigeria. Erhabor explained that the Federal Ministry of Health is developing a policy to address this issue and regulate the migration of Nigerian health workers.

“The total number of medical laboratory scientists that have migrated is 10,697,” he stated, highlighting the need for a policy to manage the emigration of health professionals. Erhabor mentioned that the government is considering reviewing the minimum wage and specific allowances for health professionals to enhance their productivity.

He emphasized the importance of creating a safe and conducive work environment to mitigate brain drain among medical laboratory scientists. Erhabor noted that more than 4,504 medical laboratory scientists left the country in 2023, citing reasons such as inadequate remuneration, uncertainties in career progression in teaching hospitals, and the pursuit of further education and professional development abroad.
