AFCON 2023: The NFF supports the Super Eagles’ medical team in response to Sadiq’s injury

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has stood by the Super Eagles’ medical team amidst backlash over their management of Umar Sadiq’s injury. The Real Sociedad striker was omitted from Nigeria’s roster for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after sustaining an injury during the 2-0 friendly loss to Guinea. Paul Onuachu took his place in the squad.

The 26-year-old, originally anticipated to be out for three weeks, was captured in a video participating in training with his Real Sociedad teammates on Monday. This development has led Nigerian football enthusiasts to question the proficiency of the medical staff.

However, the NFF has defended the medical team, asserting that they handled Sadiq Umar’s injury with competence and professionalism. In response to media reports and social media discussions, the NFF released a statement addressing the circumstances of Umar’s withdrawal from Nigeria’s squad for the ongoing 34th Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

Expressing surprise at the circulating news, the NFF clarified that their medical team meticulously followed proper procedures and diligently reached conclusions before advising Head Coach José Peseiro on Umar’s withdrawal. Despite the medical team’s decision not to engage in public disputes, the NFF emphasized that they won’t tolerate any attempts to undermine their collective responsibility to the Africa Cup of Nations championship. The statement reiterated that Umar was kept informed throughout the process, starting his rehabilitation with the team physiotherapist before returning to his club in Spain.
