Antony spares Man Utd’s blushes after Newport threaten FA Cup shock

Manchester United narrowly escaped a potential upset in the FA Cup against Newport County, clinching a thrilling 4-2 victory over the League Two side on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag’s team found themselves in a precarious position after squandering a two-goal lead at Rodney Parade. Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring for United, followed by Kobbie Mainoo’s debut goal for the club in the first half of the fourth-round tie.

However, Newport, currently positioned 16th in League Two, rallied back with Bryn Morris reducing the deficit before Will Evans leveled the score in the second half.

Amidst United’s shaky performance, Antony emerged as an unlikely hero, scoring his first goal of the season and helping the team secure the win. Antony has endured a challenging season marked by poor form and allegations of domestic violence, which he has denied.

Rasmus Hojlund added a late goal in stoppage time, providing United with a more comfortable margin of victory.

The win comes amidst ongoing challenges for manager Ten Hag, including reports of a dispute with Marcus Rashford.

Ten Hag, whose team currently sits in eighth place in the Premier League and has been eliminated from the Champions League, addressed Rashford’s absence by citing illness, despite reports suggesting otherwise.

When pressed about the matter, Ten Hag simply stated, “It’s an internal issue that I will address.”
