‘I started my career as DJ’ – Kcee

Popular Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, also known as Kcee, recently shared in the latest episode of the Afrobeats Podcast that he initially embarked on his career as a disc jockey.

During the discussion, the ‘Limpopo’ hitmaker revealed that both he and his brother, Emeka Okonkwo, also known as E-Money and co-founder of Five Star Music, started out as DJs before transitioning to their current careers.

Reflecting on his upbringing, Kcee mentioned, “My father was involved in the music industry as a DJ and a record seller. Growing up, I was immersed in an environment where my father sold records, familiarizing myself with the music of various old-school artists. I began assisting with record sales at the age of 5 or 6.”

“During my time in secondary school, I was already managing an entire record store and performing at parties. Both E-Money and I were active DJs, exposing ourselves to a wide range of artists’ music,” Kcee shared.

He acknowledged his father’s influence in molding his music career, attributing much of his success to him.

Kcee emphasized that his ability to identify hit songs has been key to his sustained relevance and longevity in the music industry.
