Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship: Lawal, Adenike hunt for gold, silver

Rafiatu Folashade Lawal and Adijat Adenike Olarinoye, a duo in weightlifting, will kick off Nigeria’s quest for gold and silver medals at the 59kg women’s category in the ongoing 2024 Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship in Egypt on Monday evening.

According to a statement from Amaechi Agbo, the Media Officer of the Nigerian Weightlifting Federation, both athletes previously secured three gold and three silver medals, respectively, during the 2023 edition held in Tunisia in May.

The championship, which doubles as a qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympics, commenced on Sunday with an opening ceremony.

The Nigerian team, consisting of four lifters and four officials, arrived in Cairo, Egypt, on Saturday for the 2024 Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship.

This championship will also determine qualification for the 2024 Olympic Games.

Lawal and Adenike will compete for medals in the 59kg women’s category at 4pm Nigeria time during the 2024 event.
