EFCC freezes N3bn traced to former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika’s brother’s account

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken action to freeze an account belonging to Abubakar Ahmad Sirika, the brother of the former Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, in connection with an alleged N8.06 billion contract fraud within the Federal Ministry of Aviation.

According to reports from The Nation, the anti-graft agency announced this development following the arrest of Abubakar Sirika for his involvement in contract fraud amounting to approximately N3.2 billion, which was traced to his private company, Engirios Nigeria Limited.

Abubakar Sirika, who also holds the position of a Level-16 officer and serves as a deputy director in the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, had reportedly secured four major contracts for Engirios Nigeria Limited during his brother’s tenure as the minister.

EFCC investigators have identified Abubakar Ahmad Sirika as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of the company and the sole signatory to its two bank accounts.

The four contracts awarded to Abubakar’s company by the former minister, which have allegedly not been executed, include: the Construction of the Terminal Building at Katsina Airport (valued at N1.3 billion); the Fire Truck Maintenance and Refurbishment Centre at Katsina Airport (valued at N3.8 billion); the Procurement and installation of elevators, air conditioners, and power generator house at Aviation House, Abuja (valued at N615 million); and the Procurement of Magnus Aircraft and simulator for Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria (valued at N2.3 billion).

Investigators have revealed that a sum of N3.2 billion from the total contract sum was paid to Engirios Nigeria Limited. Allegedly, upon receiving this payment, Abubakar Sirika transferred the funds to various companies and individuals.

Furthermore, investigators claim that there is no evidence of any work being carried out on any of the contract items up to the present time.

Hadi Sirika served as the substantive Minister of Aviation for Nigeria following President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election in 2019, having previously held the position of Minister of State in 2015. He was also linked to the Nigeria Air controversy, which garnered significant attention.
