Tears as body of NYSC member who died during AFCON match leaves Yola for burial [Photos]

After a tragic match between South Africa and Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Wednesday, Peter Yunana, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), passed away, his body was moved on Saturday out of Yola, the capital of Adamawa State, surrounded by the grieving relatives and students of the school where he was assigned his primary duty.

Yunana was one of several Nigerians who lost their lives on Wednesday due to the tension that the semifinal between South Africa and Nigeria caused.

He was watching the AFCON match while teaching at the Government Secondary School in Numan when he abruptly slumped and passed away.

His remains was removed from Yola on Saturday in preparation for his burial, which was scheduled for Sunday in Makarfi, Kaduna State.

Several of his classmates and colleagues arrived while he was being driven from Yola to Makarfi in an ambulance.

To say goodbye to the late Yunana, the NYSC comrades, GSS students and staff, and government representatives, including David Belu Afremond, Secretary of Numan Local Government, gathered at the Numan bridge on the Yola-Gombe highway.

The deceased was a 26-year-old Shehu Idris College of Health Technology, Makarfi, Kaduna State, community health graduate.

On November 1, 2023, he registered for the NYSC, and on October 31, 2024, he was scheduled to be released.

He was providing his services as a Chemistry teacher at GSS Numan.
