2024 UTME commences nationwide with minimal disruptions

2024 UTME commences nationwide; The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), following several months of planning, began the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) on Friday in more than 700 locations nationwide.

Despite internet malfunctions, JAMB assures no applicant will be disqualified for minor difficulties, ensuring fairness in the process.

Prof. Ishaq Oloyode, the Registrar of JAMB, however, criticized some corporate organizations and individuals who hastily award scholarships to alleged top performers or candidates who scored the highest while fielding questions from reporters after overseeing the examination in Kogo-Bwari, Abuja. He regretted that this practice was undermining the examination body’s functions.

Mmesoma claimed N3 million scholarship from Innocent Chukwuma, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Chairman, for top scoring.

Mmesoma claimed top 2023 UTME score, but JAMB disclosed she falsified results she boasted about later.

Later, she acknowledged that she had manipulated the results with her phone.

Oloyede expressed discomfort with UTME scholarships solely based on exam results, overlooking other admission criteria, he stated. (20 words)

MTN and others offer scholarships to top scorers, but we discourage it; post-UTME scores and O Levels also matter.

“Why rank individuals too soon when, if you’re going to NDA, your physical activity will be added to it before we can declare you the best?

“You’ll see someone claiming that their youngster received seven A1s in addition to his 330 score. Is he ineligible? He could be eligible if you were to rate the citizens of your hamlet;

Oloyede reassured applicants facing technical issues to remain calm as they would be rescheduled for the test. (20 words)

He claims that everything has gone well so far with the UTME, with only one center reportedly experiencing problems.

We kindly request that the public acknowledge that certain centers will not succeed. There is only one center that I am aware of that failed today.

Considering the nation’s development discrepancies, I expect around 10% of centers to encounter issues by the day’s end.

“We do not condone such actions, but in the event they occur, we urge everyone to refrain from causing disruptions to others.

“It’s crucial to understand that if a session is disrupted due to any issue, affected candidates cannot proceed to session two immediately. Instead, they will need to step aside, and the relevant authorities at headquarters will need to be informed.

Rescheduling for affected candidates starts after 4:30 p.m., ensuring completion of exams for sessions two and three.

Affected candidates might sit for exams in session four or be rescheduled for the following day, emphasized the JAMB leader. (20 words)

Additionally, it’s worth noting that JAMB has authorized owners of Computer Based Centres (CBTs) to detain any parents found near examination halls. This measure is taken due to suspicions that some parents may be involved in facilitating exam malpractices.”
