The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has directed all 200 to 600 level students in the Faculty of Dentistry and Dental Surgery to vacate campus due to admissions exceeding the quota approved by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
The decision came after a meeting involving the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Banku Obi, the affected students, and their parents. During the discussion, the university admitted to enrolling significantly more students than permitted by regulatory authorities.
Many students expressed shock and frustration, pointing out that they had already spent millions of naira on tuition, accommodation, textbooks, and other necessities before being suddenly dismissed.
One student questioned how the university could admit over 300 students when the official quota only allows for 10 graduates per year. Another described the situation as a “massive injustice,” accusing the university of prioritizing profit over students' futures.
Reports also suggest that the Vice Chancellor warned students not to stage any protests, further intensifying anger and dissatisfaction among those affected.
As the situation escalates, students are demanding the reversal of the directive and holding the university management accountable for the crisis.
