'Fallout' EP's First Movie Script in 12 Years Sounds Perfect for 'Interstellar' Fans

Much like his brother Christopher Nolan, who is set to return to theaters later this year with The Odyssey, Jonathan Nolan has made a strong foothold for himself in the entertainment industry, albeit particularly in the TV space. That's particularly true for the sci-fi genre, after exploding onto the scene with the creation of Person of Interest, before then helping co-create one of HBO's most ambitious shows with Westworld alongside his partner Lisa Joy, only to then help build arguably the greatest video game adaptations ever made with Prime Video's Fallout. That being said, Jonathan is no stranger to filmmaking either, as his writing can be seen in some of Christopher most important films, including Memento, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, and perhaps the Nolans' most complex and visually striking sci-fi adventure yet, Interstellar.

The road to getting Interstellar off the ground was a long one, with even Steven Spielberg being attached to direct the project before Christopher Nolan took the reins. Still, the multi-year journey was well worth it, as not only was Interstellar adored by critics and audiences alike, but it also went on to gross over $773 million at the box office. While Jonathan Nolan appears to be just getting started with the hugely successful Fallout, he recently revealed a desire to return to feature screenwriting, and it's a desire closely tied to some "unfinished business" regarding Interstellar. On March 19, I was in attendance for a panel hosted by The Paley Center for Media and moderated by Fallout star Kyle MacLachlan. Nolan was asked what he wants to do next beyond more seasons of Prime Video's video game series. After jokingly responding with "a nap," Nolan revealed he has an idea for a cinematic space opera movie for a few key reasons:

"I've been working on a space opera for a while. I've always wanted to tell a story in that milieu. Interstellar, the draft that I wrote for Spielberg, was twice as long. It was totally unfilmable. The movie is kind of half of what I wrote for Steven, and Chris [Nolan] wisely came in and took to his own ideas. The movie had aliens in it.

"It was fun, so there's a little bit of unfinished business for me with that genre. My first memories are helping Chris make Star Wars movies in our garage. I would like to get there at some point, but we're having so much fun on TV."

MacLachlan followed up by asking whether Nolan's mystery project could be turned into a show rather than a movie, and Nolan responded that, while he loves TV, filmmaking is really his "first love" and that "rumors of the death of cinema have been greatly exaggerated."

Is 'Fallout' Returning for Season 3?

Before Season 2 of the smash-hit sci-fi series even premiered, Prime Video already confirmed that Fallout would indeed return for Season 3. After its complicated characters ventured through the Deathclaw-infested city of New Vegas, Season 3 will once again see Lucy (Ella Purnell), Maximus (Aaron Moten), and The Ghoul (Walton Goggins) explore new facets of the Wasteland. Season 2 left off with a tease of Colorado (a location never explored in any of the Fallout games), the nefarious Enclave, and the robotic weapon known as Sentinel Prime, but it's anybody's guess what Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have in store.
