HBO’s 6-Part Hard Sci-Fi Saga Gets Colossal Future Update
Sci-fi franchises consistently produce some of the biggest critical and financial hits nearly every year, and the franchise that’s come to define this generation of sci-fi stories is Dune. The first Dune movie was released in 2021 and was an instant smash hit, earning scores of 83% from critics and 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes on its way to grossing $410 million at the box office. It also won six Oscars, which made Warner Bros.' decision to move forward with a sequel an easy one. Dune: Part Two was released at the start of 2024, and it accomplished the unthinkable: It was universally lauded as even better than the original. The third and final installment in the franchise will be released later this year, and it’s expected to be one of the most successful movies of the year.
The Dune franchise has already expanded once on the small screen last year, though, with Dune: Prophecy. The hard sci-fi series takes place 10,000 years before the events of Denis Villeneuve’s movies, which wiped out all potential questions about crossovers from characters between the movie and show. The fate of the series hung in the air for the first few weeks it was on the air, but HBO decided to renew Dune: Prophecy for Season 2, with production beginning last year. Now, roughly 15 months after the Dune: Prophecy Season 1 finale, news broke this weekend that production on Season 2 has officially wrapped. This could potentially allow the series to return before the end of this year, if the post-production team doesn’t have too much trouble polishing VFX and making sure things are up to the high standard fans have come to expect from anything Dune related.
