In February, fans of the Netflix series Terminator Zero finally received news on the future of the hit animated series, after almost two years of waiting. Taking to social media, writer and creator Mattson Tomlin delivered the news many had expected, and more had been fearful of, declaring that Terminator Zero had been officially canceled. "The critical and audience reception to it was tremendous, but at the end of the day, not nearly enough people watched it," Tomlin wrote, adding that Netflix offered to let him do a few more episodes to "wrap up the story," but he declined, saying, "I felt the story I wanted to tell was much longer, and the finale of season one actually left things in a good place. But they didn’t have to offer that. Good partners here."

If you're still frustrated with the decision to cancel this latest Terminator project, fear not, as the movie that started it all now has a new streaming home. Released in 1984 to an unsuspecting global audience, The Terminator blew theatergoers away with an R-rated action sci-fi experience like no other. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the titular cybernetic android, the film is now considered one of the pillars of both the action and sci-fi genres, and boasts a "certified fresh" 90% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus on the site reads, "With its impressive action sequences, taut economic direction, and relentlessly fast pace, it's clear why The Terminator continues to be an influence on sci-fi and action flicks."

Sure, its sequel seven years on might be considered slightly better, but The Terminator wins more credit for being the first to do it. Beginning this March, you can catch this all-time classic on HBO Max in the U.S., where it joins an impressive smorgasbord of content already available. A synopsis for the movie reads:

"Disguised as a human, a cyborg assassin known as a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) travels from 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton). Sent to protect Sarah is Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn), who divulges the coming of Skynet, an artificial intelligence system that will spark a nuclear holocaust. Sarah is targeted because Skynet knows that her unborn son will lead the fight against them. With the virtually unstoppable Terminator in hot pursuit, she and Kyle attempt to escape."

'The Terminator' Had an Impressively Low Budget

Given its place among the very best movies of its kind, learning that The Terminator was made for just $6.4 million comes as a big surprise. Made by the then-unknown James Cameron and intended to be a sci-fi B-movie, much of the script for the film was designed with cutting costs, scaling back on sci-fi set pieces and opting for a grittier, more intimate story that ultimately helped it stand out from the crowd.

The Terminator is streaming on HBO Max this March.
