'The Pitt's Isa Briones Returns to Broadway 'Just in Time' With a Look at Her New Role [Exclusive]
Isa Briones is leaving the Steel City behind and is embarking on a mission to sing and dance across the Great White Way. Today, it was announced that The Pitt star will be returning to her Broadway roots to take over the role of legendary singer Connie Francis in Warren Leight and Isaac Oliver’s breakaway hit Just in Time. The title is just the latest in the actress’s long lineup of big-time theatrical credits, having previously wowed audiences through her stage performances in productions of All Nighter, Hadestown, and Grease. In a true case of having her cake and eating it too, Briones on-stage run will be a limited one, so fear not, fans of HBO Max’s gritty medical drama, as she’ll be cruising back through the Squirrel Hill Tunnel in no time to rejoin the cast for Season 3.
In an upcoming episode of Collider Ladies Night with Perri Nemiroff, Briones opened up about her latest opportunity and what it means to her professionally to be given the chance to work alongside some of the biggest names in the industry. For starters, she told Nemiroff that she was “excited” to fully engulf herself in Just in Time, with her showings slated to begin on April 1. The bittersweet part of the Star Trek: Picard alum’s latest Broadway foray is that she’ll have to leave earlier than she might like to scrub in for Season 3 of The Pitt, as she revealed, “It’s a very short run because then I got to go back to The Pitt, which is hard because it’s nice to not be in a show for so, so long and you’re dying at the end of it […] And so I’ve done that a lot recently where I get just a little time in a show, and I'm like, I was just getting going.”
As for her transformation into the “Stupid Cupid” and “Lipstick on Your Collar” singer, Briones couldn’t be more thrilled. “I get to play Connie Francis, who’s just such — what a beautiful voice,” she said. “And I grew up listening to her and to get to embody such grace and femininity in such a strong and beautiful way. I’m just so excited.” Currently, Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland is performing the role that will soon go to Briones, who referred to her peer’s work as “incredible,” adding, “So, I’ve got very big shoes to fill.” The show itself turns back the clock and goes back to the 1950s and 1960s while following the life of famed crooner Bobby Darin. Turning herself into a real-life legend like Francis might seem intimidating, but Briones is more than ready to step up to the challenge, sharing:
“I’ve never done something like that where it's so intimate and you get to really interact with the audience. It feels almost like you’re in a nightclub, it’s almost cabaret. It’s such a great energy to really involve the audience in what you’re doing. And also I love doing something like period too. One of my favorite things is manipulating my voice to sound like other eras or to sound like other people. I really love to play vocally and so getting to go into this era is like so exciting as well.”

Isa Briones Achieves a Childhood Dream With ‘Just in Time’
Hyland isn’t the only cast member of Just in Time to be departing soon, with its original leading cast member, Jonathan Groff, also parting ways with the production. In his place, Broadway legend and Glee star Matthew Morrison will take over the role of Bobby Darrin ahead of Hazbin Hotel’s Jeremy Jordan. Admitting that starring opposite Morrison is a dream come true for her younger self, Briones told Nemiroff: “If you told me when I was 11-years-old at my Glee-themed birthday party that one day I’d get to work with Mr. Schuster, my God.” And, in case you were wondering, Briones did indeed go to her Glee-themed party as none other than Heather Morris’s Brittany S. Pierce.
Briones’ Broadway journey with Just in Time begins on April 1. Stay tuned for Briones' full episode of Collider Ladies Night with Nemiroff coming soon.
