Taylor Sheridan's 2018 western drama was nothing like anyone expected. The series premiered on a relatively unknown network but quickly gained a significant audience, one that continued to grow with each passing season. Eight years later, the Yellowstone universe is one of television's most popular franchises, with three spin-offs made and others in different stages of development. However, the franchise's popularity has not extended to every spin-off, especially the latest one, which focuses on the youngest Dutton sibling, Kayce (Luke Grimes).

Titled Marshals, the show blends Yellowstone's serial format with procedural elements as Kayce moves on from ranching to become a marshal. He joins a ragtag team led by his former Navy SEAL buddy, Pete (Logan Marshall-Green), and together they penetrate inaccessible parts of Montana that have served as breeding grounds for crime. Marshals has been poorly received with a 44% critic score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score is even worse at 28% as of this writing. However, this hasn't stopped the CBS series from claiming its rightful place on domestic and global streaming services. Data from FlixPatrol shows that Marshals is one of the most popular shows in the world right now, climbing to the top position on streaming charts for services like Paramount+, SkyShowtime, and Amazon.

Collider's Michael John Petty appreciated the show's shift in tone and praised it. An excerpt from his review of Marshals Season 1 reads:

"Marshals is a neo-Western that is chock-full of potential. It's action-packed, thrilling, and full of everything you could ask for in a Kayce Dutton-led series that fights hard to divorce itself from the "Y" that still lingers in the background. It's not perfect, nor does it claim to be, but once it gets through the initial growing pains, it will be able to stand firmly on its own. The chemistry between Grimes and Marshall-Green is exactly what the bond between two ex-SEALs should be, and it's not hard to like the rest of the Marshals cast as well, especially as we begin to learn more about them. No, it's not Yellowstone, but Marshals doesn't need to be. As Kayce Dutton learned by the very end of the original series, he can forge a new path and start again. So far, that new beginning has our attention, even if Sheridan is no longer in the saddle."

Tomorrow is the last day of winter, so let's bundle up one last time for a wintry mix of some of the coldest television settings we've ever seen.

What to Expect in the Next Episode of 'Marshals.'

In Marshals Season 1, Episode 4, "The Gathering Storm," Kayce's actions come under serious scrutiny. "While Kayce and Cal battle the elements, terrain, and wildlife to rescue the survivor of a helicopter crash, Andrea leads the rest of the Marshals in an investigation into Kayce’s use of lethal force against the Clegg brothers. Andrea is told that ridding the Marshals of a Dutton is in the team and Andrea’s own best interest. Meanwhile, Kayce tries to save a man who reminds him of his father in all the worst ways," according to the episode's official logline. Marshals also stars Brecken Merrill (Tate), Ash Santos (Andrea), Arielle Kebbel (Belle), and Tantaka Means (Miles).

Catch new episodes of Marshals on Sundays at 8 PM ET on CBS.
