On Friday night, Liverpool Football Club made an emotional announcement, officially retiring the iconic No. 20 shirt in memory of their late forward, Diogo Jota.

This heartfelt gesture means that no player will ever wear the No. 20 jersey for Liverpool again, ensuring Jota’s legacy lives on eternally within the club.

The Portuguese star tragically lost his life, along with his brother André, in a devastating car crash in Spain. The brothers were laid to rest last Saturday, leaving behind a wave of grief across the football world.

Following discussions with Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family, the club decided to retire the number in his honour — a tribute that spans not just the senior team but also the Women’s and Academy squads.

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and quickly became a key figure, contributing to major successes including a Premier League title.
